Size regulation blossoms in Kobe.

Coincident with the blossoming of the sakura was the 14th annual CDB Symposium hosted by the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan. This year's meeting, 'Size in Development: Growth, Shape and Allometry' focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying differences in size and shape and how they have evolved. On display was the power of using diverse approaches ranging...

Algorithms from Blossoms

Blossoming is a theoretical technique that been used to de velop new CAGD theory However once we have developed this theory we need to devise algorithms to implement it In this paper I will dis cuss converting blossoming equations into code noting techniques that can be used to develop e cient algorithms These techniques are illus trated by considering the operations of basis conversion and pol...

Size regulation in Dictyostelium.

The division of large aggregate centres into separate slugs was examined in two strains of Dictyostelium discoideum which differ in size. The evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that the size of the slugs is determined by two factors; one is the ability of a tip to inhibit surrounding cells from forming an independent, rival tip; the other is the ability of the surrounding cells to resis...

A novel colorimetric method to quantify tannase activity of viable tannase-producing bacterial strains was developed through application of a visual reading method that was to detect the activity qualitatively. The novel method was sensitive enough to quantify the marginal tannase activity of strains that could not be otherwise measured by conventional spectrophotometric or colorimetric methods.

In selecting input variables by block addition and block deletion (BABD), multiple input variables are added and then deleted, keeping the cross-validation error below that using all the input variables. The major problem of this method is that selection time becomes large as the number of input variables increases. To alleviate this problem, in this paper, we propose incremental block addition...
